Mary Ross Buchholz, sketching since she was a child, is passionate about her drawing. A devoted wife and mother of three, she expresses her joy by drawing and painting a broad range of subject matter. This West Texas native has had no formal artist training, choosing instead to pursue her interests in Animal Science by obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree at Texas A & M University in the early 90’s. Because of her proficient drawing skills, in 1996, Mary chose to fully dedicate herself to a new career as an artist and has been avidly at work.
A pioneering Texas ranching heritage has enabled Mary and her husband to raise their family in rural West Texas near the town of Eldorado. Their ranching operation consists of a variety of livestock (cattle, sheep, goats and quarter horses) along with a vast array of wildlife. While paying homage to her forbears, Mary takes great pride in portraying the animals and the environment of the west for those few still ranching and for those interested in its history.
Fortunately for Mary and because of her surroundings, she is able to paint what she lives as her family and friends are often the subject of her work. Whether it be sheep bucks panting under a shade tree, her boys helping work livestock, or her husband training colts the possibilities for future paintings are endless. Mary’s closeness to the land empowers her in capturing the essence of her subjects. Her innate ability to render a subject’s likeness through realistic textures and expressions are some of Mary’s most accomplished traits.
Mary is a member of the Portrait Society of America, a signature member of the American Plains Artists, and a member of Oil Painters of America.
